Step-1

Insert your USB flash drive and back up all the existing data in it.

Open the command prompt. If you are using Windows 7 then open it with as an administrator.

Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right-click on “Command Prompt” and select “Run as Administrator”.

Step-2

In the command prompt type:-

DISKPART and then hit enter

This will start the Microsoft DiskPart utility

Step-3

Now type the following command:

LIST DISK and hit enter
This will show you a list of available disks on your system. Disk 0 is usually the hard disk. In my case, usually, the last disk is pen drive suppose I have my DISK 5 If you have a different number on your system then you need to replace 5 with that number, 5 is the USB drive number on my system. Now give the command as shown below:

SELECT DISK 5 and hit enter

Step-4

Now give this commands one by one as shown below:

CLEAN and hit enter
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY and hit enter
SELECT PARTITION 1 and hit enter
ACTIVE and hit enter
FORMAT FS=NTFS QUICK and hit enter
ASSIGN and hit enter
EXIT and hit enter

Minimize the command prompt and proceed to the next step.

Step 5

Insert the Windows 7 installation disk or any window disk that you want and note down the “drive letter” of your DVD/CD drive. In my case, it is “H:”. Now type the following list of commands as shown below:

H: CD BOOT
CD BOOT
BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 M: ( M: is USB drive letter)
EXIT

Step-6

Copy the contents of your Windows 7 installation disk into the USB flash drive.

That’s it! Your USB is now ready to boot and install Windows 7 for you. Don’t forget to enable the “USB Boot” option and change the “boot priority to USB device from hard disk” in your BIOS settings.

Conclusion

The command prompt is the best way to create a bootable USB Drive. The other advantage is that you do not need any software to make your Pendrive bootable.

Therefore, your system will avoid 1 additional software and it can help a little bit (almost negligible) to improve the speed of your computer. If you don’t like working on commands then you can also create a bootable Pendrive by using a software. It takes only a few clicks to make a bootable Pendrive using the software.
